Letter from Jenny
To make a revolution, people must not only struggle against existing institutions. They must make a philosophical, spiritual leap and become more ‘human’ human beings. In order to change, transform the world, they must change, transform themselves.

Dear Springhouse community,
A dear friend of mine founded a school and eventually left it, saying he would never again try to bring forth his vision from within the system of education.
He once told me that he dreamed of a time when, if a child were asked what school is, the child would simply point in every direction.
I’ve been thinking about that lately.
I find it increasingly strange that we curate learning as though it were something separate from life.
We create subjects from the living world: history, science, art, culture, ecology. We take things that are alive and turn them into things to be studied.
Rather than learning within life, life becomes objectified and subjectified.
I wonder if the deeper work of education is not to curate more options for learning, but to create conditions for genuine participation in life. To be in relationship with one another, with place, with shared work, beauty, difficulty, mystery, and the living Earth, and to allow learning to emerge from those relationships.
Because none of us are finished learning how to live...
